Upcoming Science Cafés in 2020

The CTSI Science Cafés and Nucleating Workshops are well-established “Community Translational Science/Research pathways” that enable our CTSI Circle of Community Engagement activities, participation in, and moreover, advancement of clinical and translational science/research (C&TR).

Objectives

  • To support bidirectional dialogue and dissemination about C&TR research/health science topics
  • To incorporate and facilitate direct interaction among researchers and community members in settings outside the walls of academia
  • To increase community health and research literacy and awareness
  • To broaden the reach and capacity for C&TR, with emphasis on inclusion of under-represented minority populations, as well as underserved populations
  • To create a platform for early, mid- and late-stage C&TR investigators to practice community-level education, and learn to participate within an authentic, equitable dialogue with the communities we serve
  • To bring ideas together and generate research protocols for Nucleating Workshops, where research/health topics are relevant to and/or generated by the community

Nucleating Workshops

  • Generate/facilitate multi-disciplinary team science/building and community engagement and participation in C&TR from the onset
  • Optimize community integration into the translational research continuum/process
  • Align workshop topics with interests of broad stakeholders (community, healthcare system, research scientists, clinicians, etc.)

Building from our regular successful community Science Café Program that was first established at St. Ann Center for Intergenerational Care (located in the heart of underserved/under-represented minority communities), we have established a new Faith-based/Ecumenical Science Café Program with a number of new partners, i.e., the Wisconsin General Baptist State Convention Inc.; which includes 30 predominantly African American churches in the Milwaukee area. New partnerships also include St. Christopher Episcopal Church in White Fish Bay (where a new multiple panel member platform strategy has been engaged), Providence Baptist Church, and Gerald L. Ignace Indian Health Center. Given these new partnerships, more than 25 Science Cafés are planned for 2020. As such, we anticipate that the 2020 Science Cafés will lead to a number of numerous multidisciplinary team science Nucleating Workshops with community participation.

Below is a schedule of the upcoming Science Cafes in 2020.
