Meet Clinical Research Scholar, Dr. Michael Harris

As a new surgeon-scientist there are many challenges to navigate. Being a CTSI Clinical Research Scholar has been invaluable for me in this process as I learn to build my research program, meld and balance my clinical and research interests, and disseminate our findings.

My medical specialty is Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery, and my subspecialty is Neurotology, which deals with medical and surgical conditions affecting hearing and vestibular function. My main clinical and research interest is in better understanding how individuals with hearing loss use cochlear implants to process speech and environmental sounds.

In large part because of lessons learned through the CTSI Clinical Research Scholars program, we have been successful in acquiring support for our research from two of our specialty societies, and we regularly share our work at national meetings and in publication. I am looking forward to what we will continue to learn, and I am appreciative of the guidance we receive from the CTSI.
