TRU Research Nursing Services

The research nurses at the CTSI Adult Translational Research Unit (TRU) are a part of an optimal clinical research environment for both, research participants and translational investigators. The nursing staff has expertise to support protocol implementation and provide care for research participants while ensuring their safety and obtaining quality measures. By collaborating with the TRU nurse manager to assist with the coordination and implementation of research protocols, investigators and study teams can maximize their efforts and time spent in clinical investigations.

The TRU offers the following nursing services:

  • IV infusions
  • Vital Signs(HT, WGT, BP, Pulse, pulse ox, Temp)
  • A variety of point of care tests
  • Assessments (medication, surgeries, allergies, medical conditions)
  • Blood draws
  • Blood processing
  • Shipment of samples
  • -20° and -80° storage
  • Participant education
  • Medication administration
  • One on one patient monitoring
  • Biopsy set up
  • EKG capability
  • Coordination of visit dates with study staff
  • Study initiation and study set up
  • Coordinating the ordering of special supplies

The research nursing staff currently works on the administration of intravenous infusions for a variety of studies that range from Sickle Cell to Alzheimer’s to transplant patients. The research nurses also monitor the research participants who are receiving the infusions for varied periods of time (up to 30 hours).

In addition to these services, the TRU nurses may be trained to provide other study specific assessments as indicated in the research protocol.

In its role as a strong arm of clinical and translational research at the Medical College of Wisconsin and all partner institutions, the mission of the TRU is to provide integrated research services, to facilitate the work of Junior and Senior clinical investigators alike in a timely, efficient and customer-friendly manner, while supporting the safe and ethical conduct of clinical research and enhancing the quality of the research experience for study participants.
