CTSI 500 Stars Initiative

CTSI 500 Stars Initiative

The CTSI 500 Stars Initiative is a ten-year, comprehensive, multi-institutional, and community-focused, education and workforce diversity plan, with the overarching objective of replenishing, while increasing diversity (underrepresented minorities-NIH defined) in the translational science workforce. Student family members are essential to career achievement and success; as such, the program also engages family members throughout the entire student experience.

CTSI 500 Stars Initiative Programs

The CTSI 500 Stars Initiative offers two educational and training pathways; namely, our Summer Internship Program and our Year-round Education Program that provides training and educational opportunities in clinical and translational sciences.

CTSI 500 Stars Summer Internship Program

Offers 6-8 weeks of hands-on experiences working with faculty researchers and research teams conducting real-life studies, as well as hands-on professional experiences working with CTSI regional partners and their research teams in research ‘support’ settings. In addition, Program leadership works with students and mentors to offer placements in our ‘Summer’ SMART (Students Modeling a Research Topic) Teams sites; as well as in our Summer ‘Advanced’ SMART Teams sites. The primary goal of the SMART Teams experience is to introduce students to translational science by building upon laboratory research to better understand clinical and community impact of disease within a patient population. Internship sites may include research labs, research support settings, clinical care settings, community sites, and much more. Participating students are offered stipends upon completion of the summer Program.

Summer Program Eligibility: High school, Undergraduate, and Graduate students in a STEM/health sciences field (including social, behavioral, and population sciences). Minimum 3.0 GPA. Minimum age 14.

Summer Program Expectations: Participation in the 500 Stars Summer Internship requires a 6-8 week commitment. Participants are expected to attend ALL activities associated with the program.
