Milwaukee Art Museum – Museum Moments

Museum Moments are a ring of cards with activities for children ages 0-5 to engage in at MAM or at any art museum/gallery. CTSI Child Advancement Network (CAN)/Vroom supported us in both developing activities and providing the “Brainy Background” science behind each activity. In addition to encouraging learning and connections the way Vroom tips do, Museum Moments also promote the ideas that 1) Even the youngest children can engage with art, and 2) Adults do not need to feel intimidated by an art gallery.

As you can see with the sample card, we organized our activities around children’s ages so that they are developmentally appropriate. The suggested age range is at the top of each card, and the cards are color coded by age range. Beneath that is an object or area to find in the museum. These were created with MAM in mind, but they are general enough to work in most art galleries (“Find a sculpture,” “Find a gallery with animals,” etc.). The adult does not need any art knowledge to do these activities, which involves asking questions, searching for things together, making sounds, and other actions that anyone can do. The “Brainy Background” on the back of each card explains what kinds of skills and understanding each activity helps to build.
