There may be funding sources out there for your project that you didn’t know about. For example, the Small Business Innovation Research and the Small Business Tech Transfer Research Programs. Both of these grants support a researcher and a US small business working in collaboration. Successful SBIR and STTR applications address a commercially unmet need and, typically, have a much better chance of being funded as there is less competition for these grants.
