A virtual seminar presented by the CTSI’s Biostatistical, Epidemiology Research & Design (BERD):
Title
Working with EHR Data: Defining the Study Cohort
Date
Friday, April 28 via Zoom. 2:00pm to 3:00pm
Speaker
Anika Szabo, PhD, Professor of Biostatistics, Medical College of Wisconsin and Director of the Biostatistics Consulting Service
About the speaker
Dr. Szabo is a Professor of Biostatistics at the Medical College of Wisconsin, and the Director of the Biostatistics Consulting Service. She collaborates with biomedical investigators across the entire spectrum of translational research from analyzing cellular assays, animal experiments, and observational studies in patients to designing prospective clinical trials and evaluation of policy impacts in national databases.
Abstract
Electronic health records (EHR) data present many complexities not seen in more traditional chart-review based observational studies. Even when the study cohort has been conceptually defined by inclusion and exclusion criteria, operationalizing this definition can be challenging. We will discuss working with coding systems, separating new diagnoses versus ongoing conditions, and accounting for the event-driven nature of the data. The process of obtaining data from a de-identified cohort through TrinetX and Honest Broker will also be demonstrated.
