CTSI KL2 Scholar Named Chair, Department of Physical Therapy at Marquette University

One of CTSI’s primary aims is to support and grow the careers and research of early-stage investigators across our 8 partner institutions by providing them with mentoring, funding for research, access to local, regional, and national networks and collaborators, and with education and training in translational science.

Dr. Allison A. Hyngstrom, PT, PhD, an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at Marquette University, received a CTSI NIH-KL2 Award in 2011 where her research focused on the central mechanism of neuromuscular fatigue after stroke. She extended her work through several CTSI Pilot grants (2011 and 2013), taking full advantage of the opportunities available through the CTSI network.

Prior to receiving her KL2 award, she participated in a CTSI Nucleating Workshop on Rehabilitation Science, where she met a number of key collaborators, including a researcher at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, in the Department of Kinesiology. The workshop kicked off an important collaboration for the team who went on to submit two grants and a manuscript together. The support provided to her through the CTSI afforded her the skills and knowledge to bring her research to the level of cutting-edge science. As a result, her CTSI-supported studies provided her with data for a successful NIH-R21 (3rd percentile) award, funded by the National Institute of Neurologica Disorders and Stroke, and an R15 on a similar topic, which scored at the 9th percentile. Dr. Hyngstrom notes that the support provided to her by the CTSI was instrumental in developing and maintaining important inter-institutional collaborations required for her research.

Since completing the KL2 program in 2014, and completing her pilot awards, the outcomes of Dr. Hyngstrom’s work have been published in more than 22 peer-reviewed manuscripts and more than 14 invited oral presentations. Such accomplishments allowed her to disseminate new knowledge and research, obtained through training and research seeded by the KL2 and pilot awards, to a wide range of health care professionals and community collaborators. The current institutional stature that Dr. Hyngstrom developed through the support and mentoring of the CTSI for her training and research made her an ideal candidate to be appointed to the role of Department Chair for the Department of Physical Therapy at Marquette University. Congratulations Dr. Hyngstrom – we could not be prouder of what you have accomplished and look forward to following your research and career progress!
